Betta smaradigia - Guitar - RARE wild betta fish

The guitar smaragdina betta fish is a truly captivating species, known for its striking appearance and unique behaviors. This wild-type betta, scientifically known as Betta smaragdina, is often referred to as the Guitar Smaragdina or Emerald Betta due to its enchanting shimmer of green-blue hues and its distinct fin patterns. The name ‘Guitar’ arises from the dark, crossbar-like markings that resemble guitar strings, elegantly displayed across the dorsal and caudal fins.

Originating from Bueng Khong Long in northeastern Thailand, the guitar smaragdina betta fish stand out among other bettas because they maintain the streamlined forms and natural characteristics of their wild ancestry. Unlike their domestic counterparts, these bettas exhibit vibrant emerald and turquoise highlights, especially noticeable in males. Females, on the other hand, tend to present a more understated coloration.

To successfully keep guitar smaragdina betta fish, it is essential to create an aquarium environment that mimics their natural habitat. They thrive best in well-maintained aquariums with water temperatures maintained between 22–28°C (72–82°F) and water parameters that feature stable, clean freshwater, ideally with a mildly acidic to neutral pH. Providing plenty of plants, driftwood, and sheltered areas not only enhances their living space but also allows them to exhibit their natural behaviors.

Filtration should be gentle to avoid strong currents, and a varied, protein-rich diet that includes suitable live or frozen foods is recommended for their nutrition. While these bettas can be territorial, particularly males, individual housing is typically the safest approach unless a breeding setup is specifically planned.

Furthermore, a secure lid is crucial as wild bettas can leap unexpectedly. As bubble-nesters, males will guard the eggs and developing fry, making it significant for enthusiasts to understand their breeding behaviors. The guitar smaragdina betta fish is an ideal choice for those who appreciate the diversity of wild bettas, with their intricate natural fin markings and the shimmering beauty they bring to any aquarium.
